It Starts With Mentoring The Youth

Article contribution to Mentor Newsletter (April 2026).

While much of the conversation rightly focuses on men finding connection and purpose, there is another critical window we cannot overlook — the years where boys first begin that journey.

At Powerhouse Programs, we work at this threshold, where adolescence brings both turbulence and possibility. These years are often described as a “wild ride,” and for good reason. Identity is forming, emotions intensify, and young men are quietly asking, Who am I becoming, and what is expected of me?

Without guidance, this can drift. With the right support, it can transform.

What we offer are intentional entry points — experiences where young men, alongside their parents, step into a modern rite of passage.

Not through instruction alone, but through lived experience: being seen by other men, hearing real stories of struggle and purpose, and witnessing first-hand what it looks and feels like to live in service of something greater. Many of our staff and volunteers have been either participants and/or even more amazing, graduates.

In fact, at our last program at the Rock in September 2025, the number of returning young men and now staff, came close to out-numbering the older men that never had the opportunity to be involved in the same program during their teenage years. Soon some of them may be resigned to vying for spots on the ‘Elder bench’!!

One parent recently reflected on their son, who completed the program in 2024. As he now prepares to leave school and step into adulthood, they describe watching “confidence, drive, common sense and belief in himself” take root — something “fascinating and beautiful to witness.”

Alongside that pride sits a truth many parents will recognise: the quiet grief that childhood has passed.

This is the work — holding both.

Importantly, it is not only young men who grow. Parents, too, are called forward — into greater presence, emotional regulation, and more skillful communication. Because the strength of the bridge depends on both sides.

If Men’s Wellbeing Inc. is building brotherhood among men, then this is where that story begins — equipping the next generation, and the families who walk beside them, to step into it with intention, emotional intelligence and a full-heart.
